Baby Lily at 13 months

Ok! On my first blog entry I was expressing a bit of maternal worry that baby Lily wasn't pulling herself up to standing and that was a bit of a delay in reaching a 'milestone' of development.

Well, this morning she she pulled herself up to standing at the bathtub, the kitchen with a finger grip on a drawer that only pulls out an inch or so because of a baby safe lock, and at the dentist office we visited for her older sister's check up. So, developmentally this is all good. She's also started climbing up our stairs and we've had to put a baby gate at the bottom.

I remember this now. Did this once already. It's a bit of an intense period where the baby becomes a toddler and tries to stand up and take steps everywhere and climb up on things...and at any moment they can fall on their face and knock a tooth out.

We have tile in the kitchen so I kept pulling her off the drawer and sitting her on her bottom while I made breakfast because I didn't want her to have a big backwards fall on the hard tile. I'll happily let her experience the falling part only if it is a nice soft landing - like sand, or grass, or plush carpet, or the bed.

Ok. Now I'm looking to add a picture. Where's that button? Oh, I see it.

Shoot!

Documenting Milestones

Lily celebrated her first birthday on March 12, 2008.

At age 1, she has hit the significant developmental milestones that pediatricians have described except for the *walk holding on to furniture (by 12 1/2 months). She will haul herself up to standing at the bathtub when the water is running to fill it up- but the motivation is so intensely high. She is screaming and howling to get into the bath. She'll crawl around looking for toys to throw in over the edge of the tub too. It's not a perfect bath unless the toy to water ratio is about 1:1. Should look like a toy soup, then she's ready to go in. And, then, she'd rather not wait to get undressed because she's so excited to go in the water - lunging off my lap toward the water while half undressed to indicate that it is time to go in.

She does clap her hands, play patty cake, wave bye bye and she has been doing this for months now when the milestone for (most children is accomplished by 13 months).

She can almost drink from a cup independently, though yesterday she proved she couldn't do it consistently when I handed her a cup of water at the park and she put it to her mouth and then hoisted it up so that all the water came out at once. Some she drank, the rest ended up all over her and got her soaked. She made a face - so unhappy to be suddenly wet and cold. She turned the cup into a sand toy immediately to cheer herself up.

She can pick up a tiny object neatly with the tips of her thumb and forefinger. I've seen her do that numerous times...just not lately. She's returned back to the whole hand scrape and grade. Though, right now she is opening and closing a board book very neatly with her fingertips. So, I think her synapses and her small motor stuff is wired correctly.

Lily can stand alone momentarily. Most babies should be able to do this at 13 months. However, Lily is really leaning forward, like a downhill skier. So, I would say that she can do it for about a beat of one second...but it isn't really truthfully standing alone.
